Hints, Tables and Forms for CPC Preparation (Part 1)

Every CPC is assigned to a stereotype (i.e. 'Skilled but Weak'). The characteristics are determined with a points-based system. This is the second part of a series about the creation of CPCs (Convention Player Characters).

The six Traveller characteristics are squared to a matrix of 36 stereotypes. Every stereotype gives an simple summary of the CPC, that helps the players to understand the character easily. It provides a fast handle to give every player a quick idea of the character. The stereotype should not be used as a bad prejudice but a general orientation.

After the the stereotype of character is known, determine the characteristics with the following rules. They produce reasonable CPCs with a similar distribution but enough differences of values that every player should feel fair treated.

  • The stereotype tells which characteristic has the highest numerical value and in the most cases which has the lowest number.
  • The Maximum is at least three points bigger than the lowest number.
  • There is only one characteristic with the highest number. One Maximum not several!
  • If a Minimum is named by the stereotype this characteristic must have the lowest number. No second characteristic has the same low number.
  • The characteristics of a CPC are bought. You have 10 points and the costs are explained in the next table.
  • The lowest allowed sum of the characteristics is 36 and the biggest allowed sum is 51.
  • You can spare points and buy later service grades or ranks or even additional benefit rolls.

The interactive table helps to apply this rules. With the button (Roll Stereotype) you determine one of the 36 stereotypes or you can select one. You can select the values of the characteristics and he costs are computed. The evaluation helps to check if the rules are followed.
